Prayer Labyrinth

What is a prayer labyrinth?

A labyrinth is simply a way to pray while walking in open space. It offers the freedom to move our bodies while focusing our minds on God.

A labyrinth contains a single path to the center and then back out again, so you cannot get lost. It has many turns but, unlike mazes, there are no dead ends. All those turns represent how our journeying towards God can seem closer or farther at any given moment, but regardless of how it feels, the direction leads us towards our Creator.

Labyrinths have been around for thousands of years, both inside and outside the church, and can be found all around the world. People have used them for various reasons, but Christians have been using them for prayer since the Middle Ages. Labyrinths have the wonderful possibility of moving prayer into our bodies. With all the transitions, unrest, anxiety, and hope swirling, we all need places to pray and be present.

How do you pray using a labyrinth?

While there are no specific “rules”, the following guide can be useful:

Step 1: Intentionally offer the time to God. If there is a particular issue weighing on your heart or a direction you feel God leading you, silently state your REASON for walking in prayer as you hit the outdoor chime.

Step 2:  As you walk in, you could talk to God about a particular topic, decision, or problem. Walking inward can be a prayerful RELEASE of whatever emotions, questions, or concerns you are caring.

Step 3:  Pause in the center. REST in the Spirit's constant presence — OR — REFLECT on Jesus being at the center of your life.

Step 4: As you walk out, listen and think about what God is inviting you to integrate into daily life. RECEIVE what might be God's emotions, questions, or concerns regarding what you prayed as you walked in.

Step 5 (Optional): REVIEW and process your experience in the labyrinth by writing, drawing, or sharing with a friend.

Mount Olivet's prayer for you as you walk the labyrinth comes from St. Theresa:

“May today there be peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into your bones and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise, and love. It is there for each and every one of us. Amen.”
