The Mount Olivet community hosts a variety of Connect Groups (small groups created around an idea or theme). If you want to get to know other community members, reaching out to one of these Connect Groups below is a great place to start.

Community and Recreation
20s and 30s Group // Group Contact: Hannah Anderson // Facebook Group
We are a group of 20-30 somethings that get together for volunteering, and social outings. An open group where all are welcome to join, or bring friends!
Book Club // Group Contact: Pat Daly
We are a group of women who meet the third Monday of the month for book discussion, treats, and to support the church library. The Book Club supports Home Free children as well as the church library. We meet during the program year and break for the summer. See Blog Post
Book Ends // Group Contact: Marlene Stimpson
Book Ends is a day time reading group that meets on the 4th Monday of every month. Men and women are welcome to join us to discuss a book that we've all read prior to the meeting. Contact Marlene to get on the email list, or find out what book is up this month.
Brew Crew // Group Contact: Eric Hansen
Do you like to brew your own beer or make your own wine? Would you like to learn how? Join in the tradition of Martin and Katie Luther - we meet the first and third Sundays of each month. We will brew together the first Sunday of the month, and go on a field trip to an area tap room on the third Sunday.
Guys Who Like Movies // Group Contact: Kevin Miller
For all Mount Olivet men and their friends. We meet the third Thursday of each month at the Caribou Coffee by the Plymouth Mann at about 6:30pm. We'll choose a movie to attend, and then adjourn to Applebees after the movie for beverages, snacks, and critique. All are welcome!
Knitters // Group Contact: Marilyn Nordquist
We call ourselves the Knitting Group, but actually anyone who does any kind of needlecraft is welcome to join us! Our favorite service project is knitting or crocheting prayer shawls for people with serious health problems or troubles. Prayer shawls are our way of wrapping people in God’s love and comfort when they need it most. The shawls are easy to make, and yarn is provided from donations.
MO Time // Group Contact: Cathy Schmidt
A group for empty-nesters and parents whose kids are out of confirmation programming. We meet on the third Sunday each month between services to connect with one another, sometimes off-site or at church!
Mount Olivet Parents Connect // Group Contact: Michelle Jarvie // Katherine Johnson
MOPC is a time for families with young children to connect with each other at monthly onsite or offsite events. They also host weekly gatherings on Sundays, 10:15am-10:45am, in Room 140. To connect online and get updates, join the Facebook Group.
Hannah Circle // Group Contact: Mary Jane Carlson
Women's group that meets on the third Wednesday at 1:30pm in each other's homes for Bible study and fellowship. Contact Mary Jane for more info on upcoming meetings.
Naomi Circle // Group Contact: Judy Sterud
Longstanding women's group that meets monthly during the program year for Bible study, fellowship, and service. They meet on the third Monday at 1:00pm. Contact Judy for info on the next meet!
Older Wiser Lutherans // Group Contact: Dave Iverson
For all Mount Olivet members, friends and family who are over the age of 55! Join the OWLs for monthly gatherings planned either at Mount Olivet or off-site excursions. Past events have included ice-cream socials, apple orchard visits, game days, and more! Contact Dave to be added to the email list!
Quilters // Group Contact: Nancy VandeVegte
This group meets three times a month on the first and third Thursday mornings (9 a.m. until noon) and the fourth Tuesday evening (7-9 p.m.). Quilt tops are sewn together by individuals at home and then the tops are tied when the group meets at Mount Olivet in the Conference Room.
Scrapbookers // Group Contact: Leslie Gentner
The Scrap Book Group at Mount Olivet gathers eight-10 times per year to share and support each other in the hobby of digital photography and scrapbooking. All styles are welcome including digital. Perhaps you’re getting ready to scrapbook? Bring your boxes and sort your photos! Just plain stuck? Come by and visit with us. Each of us manages our process differently. Maybe one of us has a way that is inspiring for you and you can get started!
Stamping Group // Group Contact: Lori Hothan
The Mount Olivet Stamping Group is a group of women who take pride in giving back to Mount Olivet as well as other communities and organizations. We create various types of cards to be sent to those who are ill, home bound, children who are hospitalized, and Trinity Birthday Box program recipients. We meet the third Saturday of each month, unless it falls on a holiday weekend. Occasionally we have open stamping to work on whatever project(s) you may have. All are welcome to come and join in on the fun of stamping and giving back to great causes.
WELLNESS & SUPPORT
Alcoholics Anonymous // Group Contact: Becky Nordeen
Mondays 5:30-6:30 p.m. in Room 140. A fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. Open to anyone looking for support as they overcome alcoholism. For more information contact Becky. This is an outside group that uses Mount Olivet space but is open to all MO members!
Christian Yoga // Group Contact: Julie Thour
Beginners are welcome - No yoga experience is neccessary. We will breathe, stretch and strengthen our bodies as we hear scripture and Christian worship music. Christian Yoga has eight to 10 week sessions in the Fall and Spring. You can sign up for eight weeks for $50. This outside group uses Mount Olivet space but is open to and attended by Mount Olivet members!
Healing Touch Spiritual Ministry // Group Contact: Tracy Dickovich
Healing Touch is a nurturing and heart-centered energy therapy with the goal of promoting healing on a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual level. It integrates prayer, hands-on healing, and anointing with oils. We offer HTSM sessions that are open to the church on the first Sunday of the month or by appointment on Monday evenings. If you'd like to be involved in the HTSM group that administers the sessions contact Tracy.
Kaleidoscope Living // Group Contact: Lisa Hansen
Sometimes life deals us blows that seem to shatter our hopes and dreams. Kaleidoscope Living is a creative endeavor dedicated to people who want to put the shards back together again, in new and hopeful ways through talking, listening, creating, and praying. Activities will engage the hands and minds! Facilitated by Michelle Jarvie and Lisa Hansen.
Prayer Team // Group Contact: Lynne Schon
A group of Mount Olivet members meet monthly to pray for those in our community. They receive both individual and general prayer concerns for their meetings. If you have something you would like the group to pray for, or if you would like to be part of the group, please contact Lynne.
MISSION AND OUTREACH
Dinner at Your Door // Group Contact: Bob Carlson
A group of volunteers that delivers meals to those who are home bound and unable to shop for themselves. This rewarding opportunity is under the umbrella of Meals on Wheels - each driver serves six homes or apartments in the west metro. Contact Bob if you're interested in joining the Mount Olivet delivery volunteers!
Habitat for Humanity // Twin Cities: Wade Borg // International: Tim Strommen
Mount Olivet works with Twin Cities Habitat volunteering for build sites and supporting the organization with Blues Brews N BBQs in the summer. We also work with Habitat for Humanity Intl. with builds overseas in Nicaragua in the spring. Contact for both opportunities are above.
Loaves and Fishes // Group Contact: Bob Carlson
This program serves 2,000 free meals every night in six Minnesota counties. The Mount Olivet group serves from Holy Rosary Catholic Church in South Minneapolis. In 28 years, this group has served over 10,000 nutritious meals for hungry children and adults in the neighborhood.
MO Night at Second Harvest // Group Contact: Joni Marti // Sign Up Here
A group of Mount Olivet members volunteered at Second Harvest Heartland, and enjoyed it so much that they’ve invited everyone! On the first Thursday of each month join other Mount Olivet members from 6-8pm and pack food at Second Harvest. This is open to anyone over age eight. If you have any questions, contact Joni. Parenting With Purpose // Group Contact: Ron Frehner // Deb Murray
Parenting with Purpose works alongside families providing mentorship, parenting classes, support services and more to combat the generational impact of incarceration. Many Mount Olivet members work closely with families as mentors.
Trinity Suppers // Group Contact: Sam Riemensnider
Our partner, Trinity Lutheran, is located in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Mount Olivet volunteers help serve a neighborhood meal that is open to all - many of the attendees are homeless or food insecure. Dinner is prepped at MO and driven to Trinity Lutheran where you will serve (and eat) dinner!
WORSHIP AND MUSIC
Chancel Choir // Group Contact: Angela Gritton
Made up of adults of all ages and musical abilities, the Chancel Choir sings regularly for 9 a.m. Sunday worship, occasionally for 10:45 worship, and for special holiday services. The Choir anchors the annual Advent Festival Concert, held the second weekend of December. This 30+ member ensemble rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7 - 8:15p.m. No audition is required and new members are always welcome.
Coffee and Donuts Team // Group Contact: Ginger Sneltjes
Formerly known as hospitality teams- be a part of the all-important coffee brewing and donut serving team on Sundays! Join either the set up or take down shift on Sunday mornings.
Handbell Choir // Group Contact: Angela Gritton
Made up of adults of all ages and musical abilities. The handbell choir performs during Easter, and Christmas. Email Angela, Worship Director, if interested in hearing the upcoming schedule!
Rejoice! Children’s Choir // Group Contact: Angela Gritton
REJOICE! children’s choir is open to 2nd through 5th graders and rehearses on Sunday mornings and sings during Worship on Palm Sunday and several times during Advent.
Ushers and Greeters // Group Contact: Ginger Sneltjes
Our ushers and greeters are placed in teams that serve on the same week each month. Jump in and help distribute bulletins, find seating, collect offering, and guide people for communion. Our greeters are the first smiling face seen at the doors for our community!

Monday Men’s Bible Study // Group Contact: Ronn Seim
The Monday Morning group meets at 6:45 a.m. in the Conference Room. All Mount Olivet men and friends are welcome to attend any time. We look at and discuss scripture as well as find ways to serve the community!
Saturday Men’s Bible Study // Group Contact: Wayne Wilson
The Saturday Morning group meets at 7:45 a.m. in Room 283 by Door B. All Mount Olivet men and friends are welcome to attend any time. We look at and discuss scripture as well as find ways to serve the community!
Theologigals Women's Bible Study // Group Contact: Linda Finley
This women's Bible study group meets weekly at church on Wednesday evenings. Join for dwelling in scripture, connecting in faith and friendship, and support for one another. Occasionally the group meets offsite for breakfast or a service opportunity. Contact Linda for the next meetup's details!
MOtalk // Group Contact: Pastor Beth Horsch
Join with others on Sunday to hear from guest speakers, partner organizations or other MO members who will share call stories, explore the scripture readings or talk about impact in the world.
Benevolence Board // Group Contact: Nick Mahlberg
The Benevolence Board was formed in 2013 and helps oversee the congregational tithe - creating more visibility for our benevolence partners and open dialogue with the congregation to make sure the fund is making the biggest impact possible!
Bible Explorers (BE Guides) // Group Contact: Erica Nolte
A BE Guide is a loving, caring and committed individual who spends time with the children of our Mount Olivet community! You do not need to be a Biblical scholar or have all the answers to be a Guide. Instead, you get to learn and EXPLORE alongside some amazing kids from age 3 to Grade 5. This is an opportunity for adults and senior high youth.
Breaking the Silence // Group Contact: Pete Erickson
This is a violence awareness and prevention series coordinated by Mount Olivet and our partners at Home Free shelter for battered women and their children. Events are held regularly to raise awareness around domestic violence, teen dating violence, trafficking and more. Join the steering team and help plan vigils and seminars.
CASYs (Caring Adults Supporting Youth) // Group Contact: Pete Erickson
CASYs are adults (20s, 30s, parents, empty nesters, etc) who lead a small group of youth in Grades 5 - 9. Be a mentor, conversation facilitator, role model, and active participant in the lives of our youth. Some of our CASYs lead the same small group from 5th Grade through 9th Grade confirmation. Social Concerns Team // Group Contact: Summer Anthony
A group of community members who represent Mount Olivet at different partner organizations including - PRISM, Home Free, Parenting With Purpose, Loaves and Fishes, Cherish All Children, Northport Elementary, and Msasani. The team meets regularly to share updates and coordinate.
Stewardship Committee // Group Contact: Tonya Brandt
Help plan, communicate, and execute our stewardship campaign - annually reaching out to the congregation to submit a pledge for the coming budget year.
Cemetery and Chapel Committee // Group Contact: Jim Devine
This committee cares for and manages our Historic Chapel and Cemetery across the street from our main building. They have overseen two major renovations that restored the interior and exterior to the beautiful space it is today!
